چکیده

Meckel's diverticulum is the most significant diverticulum occurring in the jejunum or ileum. It is a remnant of an omphalomesenteric or vitelline duct which normally obliterates at about the seventh week of foetal life (Oppenheimer, 1962). For reasons unknown, a remnant of the duct may persist, more or less completely, as a tube or cord arising usually from the ileum 25-90 cm from the ileocaecal valve with or without a distal attachment to the umbilicus (Fig. 1) (Gurd, 1966; Oppenheimer, 1962). It may cause volvulus, strangulation or intussusception (Soderlund, 1959). The incidence of Meckel's diverticulum has been reported as being 2 %, occurring more frequently in men than in women (Martin, 1955; Oppenheimer, 1962; Soderlund, 1959). However, according to a recent study performed in the Departments of Anatomy and Pathology of Tehran University Medical School, the occurrence of Meckel's diverticulum seems to be three times greater than previously reported. The present paper reviews these findings.

Delayed imaging for detection of Meckel's diverticulum in Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy

Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy is the modality of choice for diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum. Interpretation of Meckel's scan identifies a focal area of radiopharmaceutical uptake in the anterior abdomen similar to normal gastric mucosa. The activity must be of the same pattern and intensity as gastric uptake. We present a 13-year-old patient with gastrointest...

Tc-99m-Pertechnetate in evaluation of meckel's diverticulum [Persian]

Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital disorder which may result in Gl bleeding. For definite diagnosis before surgery, radiographic procedures such as small intestine barium studies are not greatly successful; on the other hand Tc-99m-Pertechnetate imaging is a physiologic and noninvasive method with high sensitivity and specificity. In this report, three patients with rectorrhagia...

Acute abdomen due to Meckel's enterolith: Case report and review of the literature.

Meckel's diverticulum is a rare condition with an incidence of 1-3% in general population. It is usually asymptomatic and is incidentally detected during laparotomy/laparoscopy. Enterolith formation within Meckel's diverticulum is even rarer. Herein, we present the diagnosis and management of a 50-year old patient with Meckel's diverticulum enterolith and discuss this rare condition based on th...

Is an Incidental Meckel's Diverticulum Truly Benign?

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract and it is found to affect nearly 2 percent of the population. Interestingly, the surgical management of an asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum remains widely controversial in the adult population. Review of the literature finds the overall risk of Meckel's diverticulum becoming symptomatic to be low; ho...

Meckel's diverticulum--still a clinical problem.

MECKEL'S DIVERTICULUM is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric duct. This observation was first made by Johann Meckel in 1809. Normally this embryonic structure is obliterated about the fifth to seventh week of intrauterine life. When this fails to occur the following anomalies may be found: 1. Complete or incomplete omphalomesenteric fistula. 2. Meckel's diverticulum. 3. Enterocysts. These anomal...
